Dear First Years

Dear First Years,

As I head into my fourth and final year at Western, I know how you’re feeling right now. You might be excited about the endless possibilities, maybe nervous about starting a new chapter, maybe a mix of all the feelings?

I know. I’ve been there, and I’m already feeling the same as my time at Western is coming to an end.

As cheesy as it sounds, I wish I could go back and tell myself what I know now. Since that’s basically impossible, I’m hoping that my experience can mean something to you!

First, take a leap and try new things. Join a new club, try a new class, talk to the person sitting on the bench outside the lecture hall, go through formal recruitment, anything! Although your first year at Western may seem scary, jump at any opportunity to try something new. Once you do, take every chance you’re given, whether it’s a philanthropy event, study date with friends or taking on leadership roles. Looking back, those are some of my favourite memories!

Secondly, say YES more! Have an 8am class but want to go to a sisterhood event the night before? GO TO BOTH - I promise a coffee from The Spoke will help! Worried about getting the best marks and spending all day at Weldon? Take a break- I know it’s hard, but don’t miss out on all the fun experiences that come along with your first year.

Next, take time to get to know your professors/TA’s/academic advisors - they are here to help you! When you’re worried about changing your program, need help on anything (school wise or even in life!) these are people who can help you. I used to be scared to email a professor and ask a question, and it may be one of my biggest regrets. Go to office hours and reach out when needed!

Lastly, don’t take any moment for granted. When I joined Theta in my first year, so many of my sisters told me how time flies and before you know it, you’ll be graduating. Until you’re in their shoes, you never truly understand it. So take time away from your phone and be present, take all the pictures and videos to remember the memories, hug everyone a little bit tighter, because in the blink of an eye, it’s almost over.

Now, if I’ve done my job right, you hopefully feel a tiny bit better about your first year. Maybe something from this letter will help you through the best 4 years ever (a girl can dream)!

Lots and lots of love,

Christina
