Living in the Theta House
By: Elexa Clement
“How do you do that?!” “Isn’t there a lot of drama?” “I could never do that.” These are only a few of the responses that I get whenever I tell people about my living situation at Western. I live with 7 other women in a sorority house and my answer to all of these responses usually goes along the lines of: “easily,” “not at all,” and “yes you could, believe me.”
Living in Kappa Alpha Theta’s Gamma Epsilon facility has been an experience like no other that I would not trade for the world. Being surrounded by 7 of your sisters 24/7 and having their love and constant support whenever you need it (whether that be at 2am when you’re stressed out of your mind studying for your exam and your housemate buys you ice cream pint or getting another housemate to do your hair and makeup for Theta Formal before even doing her own because you are hopeless when it comes to that kind of stuff), it is never a dull moment in the Theta house.
As an extrovert, I was very excited to move into the Theta house, but the truth is, the house is so big and everyone has such different schedules, that you truly do not see your housemates unless you seek them out. Of course though, due to the volume of other housemates, there will always be someone that you can seek out to have a movie night in the loft with and there will always be someone home to give you moral support in picking out what outfit (or more specifically, which letters) you will wear to campus that day. Since it is a chapter facility, living in the house also means that you can walk to the dining room to find 6 other Thetas studying, you have easy access to house chapter meetings, and you can wake up at the latest possible time for recruitment, since recruitment occurs in your very own living room. These are only a few of the perks (believe me, there are so many more) of living in the Theta house.
There will never be another time in your life when you have the opportunity to live with 7 other women and there will never be another time where you can tell people you live in a sorority house. No, living in the Theta house is not QUITE like the opening scene of Legally Blonde, but I know the Theta House girls would have the same level of enthusiasm and support that Elle Woods got when she scored a 179 on her LSAT for pretty much anything I do.
I am grateful for the porch swing outside the Theta house that allows for easy people watching, the walk in closets that the house provides to all who live in it, and most importantly, the community that the Theta House fosters.
